West Contra Costa County sets itself apart from many communities by sustaining a wealth of ethnic diversity and with such rich diversity come new economic opportunities. The Business Development Center recognizes the importance to capitalize on these prospects and is working with West County residents to increase small business success. To promote and honor these local entrepreneurs the BDC recently hosted it’s first small business awards ceremony “Turning Visions into Reality” and was featured in the Contra Costa Marketplace. Francisco Flores started his first business when he was 7. In his hometown of Chavinda in the Mexican state of Michoacan, Flores rented out his comic books to other children for 10 centavos a pop. "After that I had started shining shoes; that was a good business," he said." I have always had a thing in mind." Univision - Spanish language TV broadcasted two interviews with the BDC and some of its Spanish speaking clients. The interviews were intended to highlight our services and successes within West County. These interviews have generated an overwhelming interest from the Latino community throughout the Bay Area. Following the interviews, the BDC received over 200 calls; we are excited about the exposure we received.
